The purpose of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) is to develop quality leaders for the Air Force. To accomplish this, the Air Force has established a rigorous training program to prepare you to lead. You’ll learn about Air Force history, core values, leadership and teamwork in both the classroom and the field. You’ll push yourself physically, harder than you’ve ever been pushed before. You’ll learn to think quickly under pressure and to focus on accomplishing your goals. If you successfully complete this program, you’ll become a leader--a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

Detachment 085 is a dynamic AFROTC unit, co-located with Army and Navy ROTC detachments in the middle of the UC Berkeley campus. Our cadets are sharp, motivated, and professional, but also know how to have fun. We offer a wide range of activities outside the regular curriculum to include color guard, military balls, Arnold Air Society (a service organization), as well as base visits, paintball outings, and competitions with the other services. During the summer, we offer many special activities including language immersion trips to foreign countries, internships, Airborne training and flying.

We are very proud of the officers that come through Detachment 085. Some of our graduates from Berkeley, and our cross-town schools, have gone on to accomplish exceptional things, including Teresa Mae Claiborne (1st black female Air Force pilot), Lt Col Rex J. Walheim (Astronaut, test pilot) and Maj. Gen. Henry B. Stelling Jr. (Vice Commander of Electronic Systems, Air Force Systems Command). Among our recent graduates, we had Pilots, Intelligence Officers, Space and Missiles Officers, and one cadet who went on to Law School. When you complete your degree and commission in to the Air Force, we have every confidence that you will continue the legacy of the UC Berkeley Air Force ROTC program.

LETTER FROM THE RECRUITING FLIGHT COMMANDER
AIR FORCE ROTC DETACHMENT 085

Interested student,

Perhaps you have known you wanted to be a pilot since you were 5 years old, perhaps you recently discovered how much you love medicine, maybe you are thinking about engineering as a major, or maybe you have no idea what you want to do! No matter where you are coming from or want to go, our goal here at Detachment 085 is to prepare you to become the best Air Force Officer you can be, whether you’ll be a pilot, an engineer, an intelligence officer, or whatever else it is you want to do. Our goal is also to develop your leadership and teamwork skills, so that even if you decide ROTC is not for you, you will have learned valuable skills from ROTC that you can carry with you into any future career field.

Our cadets have many opportunities they can take advantage of during the summer after Freshman and Junior year. In the past few years we have sent cadets to Egypt and Siberia, to study languages. In summer 2006, our cadets participated in programs throughout the United States, flying in T-37s, C-17s and KC-10s. One cadet spent the summer studying language in China. Other summer opportunities include courses in engineering, Research lab experience, Nurse Orientation, and Cultural Immersions, NASA Internship, Airborne training, internships at the pentagon, flying gliders, or going through Combat Survival Training.

Here at Det 085 we have the advantage of being co-located with Army and Navy ROTC. Our cadets participate in the yearly Field Training Exercise with the Army, judge JROTC competitions with Army and Navy cadets, and compete against the other services in the Annual Tri-Service Field Day. The 2006 Tri-Service Cup Winner? Air Force ROTC Det 085! We have paintball competitions and learn Land Navigation and survival skills from an experienced ex-SERE (Survival, Escape, Resistance, Evasion) instructor.

Our cadets are also exposed to a variety of career fields through our proximity to Travis AFB. Recent Career Day Speakers included: OSI Agents (Office of Special Investigations), Security Forces, JAG officers, C-5 and KC-10 pilots, Intelligence officers, Logistics Readiness Officers, Finance Analysts, Civil Engineers, Lawyers, and Maintenance Officers. Cadets are also able to hear exciting first-hand accounts from officers. In-class speakers have included officers from sister services, a pilot who flew the presidential motorcade to India in 2005, and a medical officer recently returned from a 2006 deployment to the Theater Hospital in Balad, Iraq.

Detachment 085 has approximately 30 cadets each year. There are many advantages to having a small to medium Detachment like ours. You will never be just another cadet to us! If you are willing to put in the effort, it is easy for you to stand out and shine. There are also more leadership opportunities available... all our returning cadets take on a leadership role in the program, and many of the freshmen find a place to make a contribution. The class sizes are smaller and you will have more opportunity for mentoring with Cadet leadership and the with Detachment Cadre.

Scholarship Opportunities are always here! Most of our Junior and Senior Cadets are on scholarship, and there are opportunities every spring and summer for you to apply for a scholarship. If you have a major in Foreign Language, Nursing, or Engineering, be sure to let us know! The scholarships for those majors are even more accessible. Det 085 is a great place to be! We have a lot of opportunities for you while you are in AFROTC, but most importantly, we will give you a great start and all the preparation you need for your future career in the Air Force.
